Rose & Grace Restaurant Sta. Rosa, Laguna

 Located along the highway right across Paseo Santa Rosa, Rose & Grace is a restaurant in the Philippines puts a twist into the humble turo-turo eateries by blending it with the kind of service and quality found in most fine dining restaurants to give you a completely unique dining experience.

 My family stopped over for lunch here on our way to Tagaytay Picnic Grove upon my brother’s suggestion. From the outside, Rose & Grace appears as another casual dining restaurant in the Philippines. But the moment that you arrive, the first thing you’ll notice here is the swarm of people in front of the restaurant placing their orders turo-turo style.

Turo-turo is the term used by Filipinos to refer to the many makeshift eateries that you’ll find along the streets of Metro Manila and other parts of the country. The name comes from the Filipino wordturo which means “to point” because you place your order by pointing to the crackpot that contains your preferred Filipino food. The server (usually the owner or one of the children) then plates this and serves it to with rice and a little bowl of soup.

Of course, Rose & Grace made a few changes. Instead of placing different kinds of Filipino food in large crackpots, they’re place onto stainless steel serving dishes, which are kept warm by special lights. You won’t find any of those wooden benches and tables that you hope and pray won’t collapse under you while you’re eating. Here, diners are seated on sturdy cushioned chairs and their orders placed on iron tables. Also, the dining area is enclosed and air conditioned, very different from the outdoor dining offered by the usual turo-turo restaurants.

Rose & Grace specializes in Filipino cuisine featuring different kinds of Filipino food from all parts of the Philippines. Our orders composed of two of my all-time favorite Filipino foods: Bulalo–a soup made of beef shank sought after for the prized marrow inside the bone–and Crispy Tawilis, a kind of fish that is only found in Taal Lake. Mom also order Ginatang Tilapia–Tilapia fish wrapped in banana leaves and cooked with ginger, mustard leaves, and coconut milk.

As we sat down and waited for our orders to arrive, there were two things that caught my attention that reminded me about those quaint turo-turo restaurants in the Philippines I’ve eaten in before. The first was the utensils. Instead of these being neatly arranged on the right side of your seating, they are all bunched up inside a small glass with hot water. The second was the arrival of those small soup bowls filled with a clear broth. The broth was really tasty (it’s the same broth they use in the Bulalo soup), refillable, and free. The waiters will happily refill your bowl with the help of a small steel pitcher. Kind of like those tea rooms where they pour you more house tea, except here it’s soup.

To say that the food here was delicious is an understatement. The meat in the Bulalo was very tender that it just falls right off the bone. The soup was full of flavor coming from the beef shank and hours of slow cooking.

The Crispy Tawilis lived up to its name. It was so crunchy that you can eat everything without having to worry about any bones.

The Tilapia was so fresh. The ginger cut the richness of the coconut milk sauce, giving that added flavor to the dish without overpowering the delicate fish.

Delicious Filipino food is not the only thing that you can find here at Rose & Grace. Because this restaurant is a popular stopover, they also sell a variety of Filipino sweets and delicacies which would make great gifts to bring home to friends and family, or a sweet treat to munch on while on the road.
